Description
This high school art drawing assignment focuses on the importance of artwork as a mouthpiece to express opinion on social issues and political issues as well as a historical record and education tool. Students are introduced to 5 artists: Dorothea Lange, Pawel Kuczynski, Isaac Cordal, Chris Jordan, and Banksy as examples of modern artists who focus on world issues.
In addition to the cross curricular connection to history, this art project also requires students to practice their drawing skills by creating a self-portrait that reflects a topic that they are passionate about. The students use an unusual technique, scanning their faces with the addition of props and text, to help convey their message.
All in all this lesson pack includes:
➢A lesson plan (with a big idea, objectives, vocabulary, national middle and high school art standards, and step by step instructions on implementing the project)
➢4 PowerPoints, to introduce the assignment with project examples, plus three PowerPoints that focus on different artist exemplars.
➢Project instructions handout
➢Pawel Kuczynski research worksheet
➢Artist research worksheet
➢Critique sheet
