This lesson explores the work of contemporary artist Kara Walker with a studio project that will engage students in thinking about social issues. This lesson has been classroom tested and observed by a high school principal.
This bundled listing includes 4 professionally designed and formatted lesson plans for the high school art teacher or homeschooler. Each lesson plan includes relevant visual art standards, objectives, resources, supply list, anticipatory set, and lesson procedures (input, guided instruction, independent practice and closure). Interdisciplinary connections and differentiations are also noted.
There is a rubric for the studio portion of the lesson, an assignment sheet, a handout for before and after watching a video clip (which can be viewed online through Art 21). The lesson contains two optional skill-building activities for improving your students' observational drawing skills in relation to working with negative space.
