This activity is a great first day activity for high school if you want to dive right into learning in a fun way. It can also be used at any time during the year.
Lesson Directions: (Paragraphs and Graphic Organizer included)
Cut the paragraphs apart and cut them in half. Give each student half of a paragraph. Have students walk around the room and find the other half of their paragraph. Once they have found their partner, students should read the paragraph and illustrate every detail they can find. The drawing they create does not have to be fancy, but should include some color.
Once students have finished illustrating their selections, have each pair present their drawing. This can be done using a document camera (one student reads the paragraph while the other points out the details) or a gallery walk (post the paragraphs and pictures and have student pairs walk around, read the paragraph and find the details).
Extension: Have students describe the mood of the opening paragraph and explain which details created that mood using the graphic organizer on the following page.
