Creating a positive classroom community begins with COMMUNITY AGREEMENTS or classroom guidelines. The acrostic RESPECT spells out very important social skills youth will need in order to excel individually and collectively. Expand on the guidelines in a brief discussion, reading through each one (you can expand on them as appropriate for your context) and create excitement for youth to be on board about the importance of community agreements.
You can also get everyone to engage with the guidelines in the following ways:
1) have a discussion about what each word means to the group to increase engagement, understanding and buy-in
2) have a paper next to the rules that everyone initials to agree
3) get everyone to put their hands out and clap and yell, 'YES' on the count of three
4) print a copy for each student
Please find attached the FREE document you can print in colour, laminate if you wish and discuss at the beginning of a class or session. Post it somewhere visible.
Note: if you would like a tailored 'Community Agreements' I can alter the documents for you at a price.
Thank you for looking and downloading! Best of luck with your session!
