Product Description
This is an intermediate English as a Second Language (ESL) examination.
It largely relates to CRIME - if you use "Flash on English" Upper Intermediate, it matches to Unit 6.
The exam starts with two reading passages, which each have five multiple choice comprehension questions. Both reading passages are crime reports.
- The first report is about someone getting their phone stolen on a train.
- The second report is about fraudulent use of credit cards by a teenager.
The next section is dialogue (10 multi-choice). It tests the students' knowledge of question types:
- Compound questions (Which/What + noun + auxiliary...)
- Indirect questions (e.g. Could you tell me if..)
- Questions with preposition (e.g. What are you waiting for?)
- Negative questions (e.g. Doesn't she look pretty?)
The third section is vocabulary, and it's back to vocabulary about crime. Ten questions, choose the word from the box.The vocabulary words are:
- burglary
- blackmail
- murder
- looting
- shoplifting
- vandalism
- sentence
- accuser
- interrogation
- arrest
- arson
- criminal
The final section is a writing section where the students are prompted to write about a crime they've heard about, maybe on TV or in the newspapers. It thus finds out if the student can use passive voice (e.g. A man was arrested...).
This test has been given to high-school grade 12 ESL learners in Thailand on several occasions. The test was 1 hour in duration each time. Results ranged across the board in a fair spread representative of ability (and representative of effort/concentration in class!).
The file is in Word and you can edit it if you need.
There is an answer key too.
I hope it's useful to you.
