PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This is a pre-intermediate English as a Second Language (ESL) examination. It's ready to print and submit - just add your school name in the header - no need to worry about time consuming format problems with Word.
It starts with two reading passages, which each have five multiple choice comprehension questions. The first passage is text from a leaflet that outlines the rules and expectations for new members of a sports club. It includes modal verbs of obligation such as must, mustn’t, should, and shouldn’t. The second passage is a letter from a boy complaining about all the chores his parents make him do around the house. It focuses on the modal verb ‘had to’.
After the reading section comes a dialogue section, 10 multi-choice questions. It’s about people expressing annoyance with one another. The phrases used in this section are:
• Mad at
• Don’t mess with
• I’ not thinking straight
• Just bit my head off
• You’re in the way
• Don’t try to tell me what to do
• You’re being a pain
• Deal with it
• Don’t look at me
Next is a vocabulary section. It’s in two parts, with the first part being pictures of sport that the students have to name. The second part is a fill in the blanks from the box of words. The list of vocabulary is as follows:
• BMX
• Kendo
• Hurdles
• Javelin
• High jump
• Done
• played
• vault
• cliff
• experience
• wrestling
The final section is a writing section where the students have to talk about a sport or game they’ve played and any achievements they’ve had in those. It thus finds out if the student can use present perfect simple.
This test was given to high-school ESL learners in Thailand. The test was 1 hour in duration. Results ranged across the board in a fair spread representative of ability (and representative of effort/concentration in class!).
The file is in Word and you can edit it if you need.
Answer key included.
I hope it's useful to you.
