This lesson is compatible with the High School Next Generation Science Standards* HS-LS1-6. The standards ask that the students, “[c]onstruct and revise an explanation based on evidence for how carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen from sugar molecules may combine with other elements to form amino acids and/or other large carbon-based molecules.”

Because the lesson includes a lab report, it is also compatible with the following Common Core English Language Arts-Literacy Standards.
Writing, History, Science, and Technical Subjects.9-10.2(A-F)

Make chemistry relevant and fun for your students with these great activities and labs!

Here is what’s included in the lesson:

-Clickable table of contents

-Teacher materials list and notes

-10 pages of vocabulary cards related to the topic of biochemistry

-A Student Objectives Sheet listing all the biochemistry objectives expected to be met by each student

-8 pages of notes discussion questions which cover the topic of biochemistry; these questions can easily be answered while students cooperatively work in groups using the Power Point Presentations

-Power Point presentations to go along with the all of the notes discussion questions

-4 pages of activities, including
1) Cornstarch quicksand
2) Water Olympics

-7 pages of Projects with Rubrics, including
1) pH of common substances
2) Examining protein shapes

-8 pages of Labs, including
1) Testing for organic molecules
2) The effects of temperature on enzyme activity

-Lab Report with Rubric

-5 page assessment covering the lesson objectives and Next Generation Science Standards*

-A comprehensive lesson plan including:
Title, Grade, Objectives, NGSS*, Materials Needed, Connections to Real Life, Connections Across the Curriculum, Anticipated Difficulties with the Content, Pre-Requisite Knowledge, Key Vocabulary, Lesson Delivery Method, Examples for Better Understanding, Assessment, Wrap Up and Review, Extensions, and Modifications.

This lesson can be used in any High School Life Science or Biology course.
