This quantitative, inquiry based laboratory exercise for physics or physical science classes examines Newton's Second Law for a rotation about a fixed axis. The exercise measures the rotational inertia of a pulley with an acceleration timer. Applicable to Physical Science, Physics, Honors Physics, and AP Physics classes.


This exercise uses an acceleration timer sold by Ward's Science.

This laboratory exercise comes bundled with Lecture: Derivation of Instantaneous Velocity
and with Lecture: General Guidelines For Laboratory Reports.

Instructor's Notes and Student Worksheets are included.

This laboratory exercise can be used in conjunction with Laboratory: Newton's Second Law, Mini Lab: The Force Board, and with Mini Lab: Forces of Friction.
