VOCABULARY LESSON 1 (of 15) from THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO HIGH SCHOOL VOCABULARY INSTRUCTION by Virginia L. Pulitzer (Virginia Pulitzer’s Educational Prizes) Help your high school students improve their vocabulary skills and ready them for standardized verbal tests while you fit effective and proven successful vocabulary instruction into your ever-tightening teaching schedule. While an English teacher at a highly ranked high school in upstate New York, I discovered that the curriculum lacked an intense immersion in vocabulary study. Since the verbal aspect of standardized testing required of students focused a great deal on the vocabulary itself, I decided to develop a program to use with my students to address this need. Virginia Pulitzer’s Educational Prizes will offer: All 15 vocabulary intensive lessons (15 words each/ 225 words total) that I developed, available in 3 groups of 5 lessons each; work on analogies, association, content, synonyms and antonyms is highlighted. Group 1: Lessons 1-5, Group 2: Lessons 6-10, and Group 3: Lessons 11-15.
Each of the three groups will include: 1. lesson plan with special analogy information 2. teacher opening lesson sheets 3. student word lists 4. a test for each lesson plus a teacher’s key and 5. review tests (with teacher key) for use after each group of 5 lessons is completed. Teachers can easily fit all groups into a typical 40 week school year. The program is also easily adaptable to a 20 week,10 week or even 5 week course due to the flexibility of its being offered in groups of 5 lessons each. My simple effective approach to the vocabulary lessons is easy to follow and employ within the classroom schedule whether the schedule is standard or flexible.
