Higher Order Thinking (HOT) Math Daily Warm-up!
Every day, the students create, analyze, compare, draw, and explain math concepts!
There are 36 weeks worth of HOT Math problems with 2 problems a day. Every day the students are creating math problems, drawing graphs, and explaining what rules mean and why they work. This file is heavy on developing number sense of whole numbers, integers, fractions, decimals, and algebraic expressions.
Simply project the day's problems on the board, and have the students work through the problems on a white board or a piece of paper. After you have given the students enough time to work on each problem, allow them to talk about the problems in groups or pairs. Then discuss each problem as a whole class. It is important that the students do most of the talking.
The problems are designed to bring up misconceptions and develop a deeper understanding of integers, fractions, decimals, and concepts.
I have recently added an answer key, but I don't recommend showing this to the students. The point of higher order thinking questions is to keep students thinking, analyzing, critiquing, and talking about math. Once students know the answer, they don’t care to listen about “the process” to finding the answer, which is the most important part! Also, most of the problems have more than one answer.
Perfect for Common Core and great for helping your students understand concepts better.
