This is a fun, but challenging, activity for fifth graders. It is well worth the time and effort. The poem itself helps students to understand how the "regular folk" felt about the Civil War. The activity encourages a lot of deep thinking, drawing conclusions, and forming opinions. If we have time after analyzing the poem and filling out the worksheet, I split the class in half--North and South. Then the two "opposing" sides meet for a few minutes and we do a whole class dramatization of the events depicted in the poem. My students love this stuff! I bet your's will too!
