This rubric was created to be used during guided reading discussions, but proved to be useful in math, science and social studies. The first page is a rubric with a short skit to show students what I am looking for in a discussion. The focus is to get students to justify their opinions when talking with peers. The second page has a scoring sheet that can be used for multiple students for multiple days. This allows me to monitor students participation and growth over a period of a few days. The final page is a list of question frames, stems and prompts. I wrote these on colored index cards and handed them out to students at the beginning of the discussion. When they participated they could turn the card back into me.
