This is a 5th grade Common Core math performance task in which students must add, subtract, and compare fractions related to the distances of various trails.
Activities are as follows:
1. Organize 11 trails in order from shortest to longest, using numbers less than one to mixed numbers less than 4.
2. Estimate fractions to find a total distance between two target numbers.
3. Find the actual total for the selected fractions.
4. Find the difference between two fractions, using regrouping.
I did this task with my 5th graders in one day. It is a great introduction to performance tasks and teaches precision and perseverance! You can differentiate groups by having your lower math students work with a partner or in a team and students who are on grade level can work individually.
