As the 2016 Presidential Election draws near, we all have opinions and hopes for our preferred candidates to prevail. Election time is tricky to approach as an elementary teacher because we want to steer clear of endorsing one candidate over another. Our students will of course be very interested in the election as a major current event. Here is the first resource in what I hope is as fair and unbiased a look at the candidates as possible!
“Letters to Hillary” is a 4 to 6 session mini-unit on our nation’s first female presidential candidate. As the 2016 election draws near, we look back on the life stories of the candidates and focus forward on our future as Americans.
*Note: If Hillary Clinton is elected in November, this unit will be updated to reflect her historic role as the first female President. Anyone who has previously purchased the unit will be able to download it again from this page or your purchases page for free!
I developed this unit because I have seen my own students absorb and make meaning of history by making personal connections to the events and figures that we study. The activities in “Letters to Hillary” are ones that my students have particularly enjoyed each year.
Included in this resource:
Teacher directions for a five session sequence.
Templates and samples for poetry writing and friendly letter writing.
Article and response pages for a Close Read about Hillary Clinton.
Template for an Interactive Notebook glue-in and a “Me for President” poster.
Suggestions for other resources to support learning and understanding.
“Letters to Hillary” would make a great addition to your lesson plans for the days leading up to the election and inauguration, or a stand-alone mini-unit connected to your reading and writing standards. You may even want to print all materials and directions and place the unit in your emergency sub tub!
Wishing you and your students an even better understanding of the events that have shaped the American nation’s history, and a clear view of what we as a nation must do to pave the road to the future.
