Product Description

I find that as students get older, they become more and more self-conscious of their drawings, especially self-portraits. They often want them to be perfect representations which can lead to disappointment and a dislike for art. Not so with this automatic drawing activity, inspired by Hilma af Klint. Students will create an off balanced, quirky distortion of their faces. The goal is NON perfection; the more unusual the image, the better it looks in the end.

You will Receive

  • 12-page, non-editable PDF
  • a single class (60 - 90 minute) duration art project
  • a read-aloud introduction script, highlighting ‘abstract art,’ ‘Hilma af Klint,’ and ‘automatic drawing’
  • questions to engage students
  • step-by-step instructions with pictures
  • gallery of student work
  • common core art standards

Materials Needed

I design À la cART lessons to be completed with simple art supplies (watercolor paper, regular pencils, fine black sharpies, colored oil pastels, and watercolor paint) as it is difficult enough trying to cart materials from one classroom to another. This automatic drawing project does need something extra: MIRRORS.

Approximate Time Needed

The time needed will depend on the age group of students but usually takes approximately 60 – 90 minutes for the read-aloud introduction, art project and clean up.

Read Aloud Introduction

You do NOT need any art and / or art history knowledge to teach À la cART lessons – it is all laid out for you. The read-aloud introduction introduces the artist and explains art movement and techniques pertinent to the lesson; with questions guiding student conversation.

Reference Materials

I like using visuals to support my lessons. Due to copyright infringement, the art pieces are not included but I have listed the artist and title of the artwork. You can do a Google image search and then share with the class by projecting images on a smartboard or whiteboard.
