Students will take one of three different roles
- Atomic Scientist
- Military General
- President or Presidential Adviser
It is July 1945. Japan is nearly beaten, but is not agreeing to unconditional surrender. Will you drop the bomb on Hiroshima or try other means? Students work together to reach an agreement, but find that ultimately, the decision rests with the president.
I follow up this lesson with a large primary source analysis lesson. Students are typically on board after experiencing what it was like to make such a monumental decision.
