Teach your students the story and significance behind the Mexican flag using the Spanish language.
The instructions explain how this mini-lesson can be altered for different grade levels:
* Younger grades (preK-3) can color the coloring sheet of the Mexican flag, as well as color an additional coloring sheet of the emblem in the middle of the flag.
* Teachers can read the story of the Mexican flag aloud to the younger grades.
*Grades 4+ can utilize a reading passage (in Spanish) with comprehension questions, and a template to draw their own Mexican flag and emblem.
This mini-lesson can be used in social studies classes, in a unit on Mexico, during International Week, or for a cultural lesson in Spanish class. Because students can work independently on the worksheet, teachers may include this in their emergency substitute plans as well. This reading is a non-fiction, information text written in intermediate level Spanish.
Learning about the Mexican flag can happen any time of year, but here are some important dates to keep in mind:
September 15- October 15 Hispanic Heritage Month
Sept 16: Mexican Independence Day
February 24th: Flag Day in Mexico
May 5: Cinco de mayo, commonly celebrated in the US
Mexico Minibook: A Country Study
Finally a country study/lesson on Mexico culture that is both authentic and culturally accurate! Let's break the stereotypes of poncho and sombrero-wearing Mexicans, and teach kids about the real Mexico. In this Mexico Minibook, students will get a short, kid-appropriate introduction to our fascinating neighbor to the south, with gorgeous illustrations that appeal to all ages.
