Historical fiction is a great genre to use to get students interested in important historical moments as well as dive into types of conflict and character motivation.

Choose any historical fiction book of your choice. Introduce the genre to your students.

Use the before you read graphic organizers to help set the stage for your text.

Then read the text once all the way through for enjoyment.

Go back to reread the text and focus in on one mini lesson at a time using portions of the text that illustrate that point.

Have students complete the story map at the end of your unit.
