This packet is a student-ready reading guide that can be used for any historical fiction text. It is designed to be accompanied by a Socratic seminar discussion at different checkpoints throughout the reading. The guide includes thoughtful, open-ended questions for each of the 5 sections of the text and pre- and post-reading activities. It also requires students to research the time period in which the text is set and the author. Through contextualizing, students are better able to understand the story plot and, they also gain knowledge about the historic events of the time. I've had students who are each reading different texts use this guide to facilitate a small group discussion. It is a great way to embed historic content with reading skills.
