Bundle Description

This Historical Fiction Genre Unit contains 20 mini lessons, 20 corresponding sample anchor charts, 20 corresponding reading prompts (to be used during independent reading), guided practice sheets, and 16 read alouds. The lessons are designed around a reading workshop framework and use genre (in this case historical fiction) to frame the reading curriculum.

20 Mini Lessons

Each lesson includes a short script, reading prompt and common-core standards. The first eleven lessons teach reading strategies and skills that can be applied to all fiction, and the last nine pertain to historical fiction in particular (see chart in product preview).

Two formats:

  • Lesson Cards--On the front you will find a short lesson script, a reading prompt and the common-core standards addressed. On the back you will find a sample anchor chart along with suggested read alouds.
  • Extended Lesson Plan--This is a full-size lesson plan that includes everything found on the lesson card as well as ideas for guided practice.

20 Sample Anchor Charts

Each lesson is accompanied by a sample anchor chart. Use this to provide students with more information, and to apply knowledge learned in the mini lesson to your most current historical fiction read alouds. (The anchor charts are not full size, I use these to give me ideas for making my own anchor charts on chart paper).

Independent Reading Focus

This is a short prompt that asks students to apply what they have learned during the mini lesson to their own independent reading. Students record their response on their reading bookmark (included) and then share with the class after independent reading time. A powerpoint is included (in both .ppt and .ppx formats) which you can use to display the daily focus onto a smart board or other projector.

Guided Practice

The guided practice sheets include some information from the lesson and space for students to apply the information to their own reading. Perfect for independent reading, guided reading and interactive notebooks. See list of extensions in the product preview.

16 Read Alouds

These read alouds correspond to the lessons---they reinforce and enhance each other. Each read aloud sheet contains more information than can be covered in a single read aloud. Simply highlight your instructional goals and the corresponding discussion questions--it's that easy! Each read aloud sheet contains the following:

  • Book Information: title, author, reading level.
  • Instructional Goals: These align naturally with the book's format, themes and content. Each discussion question is labeled with a corresponding common core standard.
  • Connections to Larger Units of Study: This section outlines how the focus of the read aloud connects to larger reading principles.
  • Book Introduction: A short introduction to the book.
  • "During Reading" Discussion: A few questions that can be asked during the reading to prompt student thinking. Each of these questions corresponds to one of the listed instructional goals and is labeled accordingly (see preview).
  • Modeling/Think Aloud: A suggestion for when the teacher can pause and model good reading behaviors.
  • "After Reading" Discussion: Discussion questions to be asked after the reading. Each of these questions corresponds to one of the listed instructional goals and is labeled accordingly (see preview).
  • Mini Lesson Ideas: A short list of mini lesson ideas that would pair well with the read aloud. The bolded mini lesson can be found in the corresponding Historical Fiction Mini Lesson Unit.

Quick Guide to Genre Study

The product includes a quick guide to genre study. The guide explains how genre can be used to logically frame your reading curriculum over the course of a year. For a more in-depth look at genre study, check out this extensive guide.
