Historical Figures Argumentative Research Paper

A complete research paper packet. This packet includes approximately 10 days worth of materials. Here is what you will get:

*List of potential figures (31 in total) who have changed world history. A partial list includes: Marie Curie, Gandhi, Stalin, Hitler, Martin Luther King Jr., Alexander Fleming, Alan Turing, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, William Wilberforce. Each of the 31 historical figures has between 4-7 sources that students can use to write their research paper.

*Full rubric for grading the Argumentative Essay.

Lesson Materials for the following days:

Day #1: Topics assigned. Students complete a mini-unit on plagiarism including why not to plagiarize, and how to summarize ideas. (2 pages)

Day #2: Stick Man graphic organizer. Students use a simple graphic organizer to practice summarization skills using a biographical source. (1 page)

Day #3: Writing a paragraph worksheet. Utilizing Kansas Strategies and their stick man graphic organizer, students practice writing a paragraph with a topic sentence, and detail sentences. Also includes an example of how to use the graphic organizer and a blank organizer that references the Stickman Diagram. (2 pages)

Day #4 Divorce from your Source. Students practice taking notes on a worksheet so that they can shorten and summarize main ideas in a way that makes it impossible for them to plagiarize later. (1 page)

Day #5 How to cite. A quick explanation about how to cite sources in the introductory paragraph using the footnotes and research tool in Google Docs. (not useful for MLA in-text citations)

Day #6-7 Students are given one of 5 specific graphic organizers based on why the person changed history (ex. Edison invented the lightbulb, so the organizer focuses on how that invention changed the life of people at the time and today) They use the provided sites in the resource list to find the answers to the graphic organizers. (5 pages)

Day #8-10 Write the research paper. (no further materials provided)
