This one to two week project makes the movements of the mid-late 1800s come alive. This project asks students to create an infomercial (in groups) using iPad mini's to shoot footage and iMovie to piece the footage together. Within this project students will be addressing not only the stance on their movement or reform, but also their opponents stance.
The movement/reforms that students are to complete this on include: Second Great Awakening, Temperance Movement, Education Reform, Prison Reform, Abolitionist Movement, Women's Movement.
This is a great 1-2 week project to wrap up the historical teachings of these movements. This project description also includes a rubric and ties to common core reading and writing in social studies.
My students loved working on this project, and especially loved taking the time at the end to view each group's project.
I did not provide an example project for them and as a result each group did something entirely different from a parody to a news report. I left the creativity up to them, and the results were fantastic!
This project took the students about six days in class to write the script, shoot the footage and string is all together, and one day to view the projects. One critique that students had was that they would have liked one or two more days. Moving forward, I may grant that request, even though in six days they were able to bring it all together.
I invite you to try out this interactive, technology driven project! The students will thank you!
