History Behind Beowulf

Knowing the history behind Beowulf can make an old (very old) text a little easier to understand visualize. Don't teach the incorrect information because that is what you were taught or how you understand it. Let me help you teach the history so you can get the literature part perfect.

This resource is entirely informational. There are 16-pages of information spanning the history of the English and Norse languages, the Anglo-Saxons, the contemporary geopolitical environment of Beowulf, clothing, and armor. I also included two pages at the end to help with the discussion about the portrayal of women in the poem.

This resource does not analyze the text. It is simply a primer for the historical elements of the poem. Use it in one class period or chunk it to help as you read.
