Columbus crashed onto the shores of Hispaniola in 1492. He wasn't the first. As teachers we all know about Leif Erikson, but do you know the mystery and legend of those others that came before? Have students dig into primary and secondary sources the first weeks of school eagerly trying to decipher legend from fact in this history crime solver.
Included in this complete lesson are two resources you can use year round: Primary v. Secondary, and How to annotate.
Introduce the lesson through a brainstorming activity to activate all their prior knowledge. Then give them a reading that will set the stage for the activity. Students then will rotate between the 7 stations discussing clues and jotting notes in their provided charts. Included are discussion questions that for student reflection.
