This is a great activity used during a unit on early colonial settlements in American History. Students can be grouped together (recommended 3-4) and assigned one of five "mystery colonies" that they must work together to solve!
Students must work together to examine two primary sources, share observations, and use context clues & prior knowledge to identify which of the original thirteen colonies they have been assigned! When students think they have solved it, they must prove their detective findings with evidence, and are sent "into the field" create a reflection in the form of a postcard! It is a great supplemental activity to use in the middle or end of a unit.
*Note: This lesson can easily be modified to have students work individually or in partners, as well. It can also be easily extended to include ALL 13 colonies, rather than the 5 selected to use in this activity.
I have used this with seventh grade students and it has always been very successful. The activity typically takes 30-45 minutes, but can be trimmed or extended to your liking. I hope you and your students enjoy it as much as I do! Thank you!
