This reading in the area of social studies lesson is called “Independence Day.” It briefly presents the struggles of a new country and events surrounding the beginning of the United States of America. There is a page of informational text followed by ten multiple choice reading comprehension questions. The reading skills deal with locating details, relating causes to effects, drawing conclusions, and vocabulary (words like colony and patriotism.) This lesson is great for building background of appreciation and spirit of patriotism. You get two pictures, one being clip art. They are both in color, but show up black-and-white in my tiff thumbnails. You also get an answer key. You will easily be able to print off this lesson, which is a word document, for the number of students you have. You will also be able to easily make changes if you find that you need to do so.
