Interactive Notebooks have gained in popularity recently for good reason. They’re a great way for students (and their teachers) to track their progress, to stay organized, and the final products look great and are something students can be proud of.
History Units Interactive Notebook and Portfolio was originally designed for my 6th grade and a 7th grade history classes. It has been modified so that it can be used with any and all of your middle school history units. It is designed to keep students engaged and organized while addressing the History/Social Studies and ELA common core standards. The activities in this resource will enhance student learning in several ways:
*Fun, colorful, interactive activities will keep students engaged.
*Although not every activity will need to be used for every unit, the consistency of using the same structure for each unit will build students confidence in knowing what is coming and what is expected of them.
*Keeping interactive notebooks or portfolios is a structured way to keep students organized. Portfolios can be kept in a notebook or binder for students to take home, or collected and stored in class. The table of contents lets students, teachers, and parents know at a glance what assignments they should have and what they are missing.
*Portfolios provide excellent opportunities for metacognitive thinking and self-reflection. Each activity here includes a sample rubric that can be given to students to assist with structured self-assessment of their work. The table of contents provides a space for them to record these assessments as well as to compare them with the teacher’s final assessments. And finally the end of unit metacognitive questionnaire requires kids to reflect on what they’ve learned, how they learned it, and how it ties into previous learning.
*The finished portfolio product is great to show at open houses and students will be proud to show off their work.
