Product Description

Using famous quotes can be a good way to introduce a new unit or topic. I've used this history quotes assignment to begin Social Studies and History units. It compliments questions like, "What is history?", "What is the role of the historian?", or "Is there any value in history?"

This editable assignment consists of a compilation of 18 quotes about history, from Voltaire to Oscar Wilde and other intellectuals. Some present a positive view of history and the role of the historian, others are more negative, while others are more neutral. The students are asked to choose 3 to interpret as positive or negative and explain why they made their choice. They are then asked to create their own history quote which they would share with the class.

I would typically read the quotes to the class on an overhead or projector, so that they can hear the tone I use, which can be a clue about the quote's attitude.
