Product Description

Build content-area reading and writing skills with the History and Literacy task card series! Created with Common Core ELA and content-area ELA standards in mind, the tasks assigned in this activity require students to identify key ideas and details as well as understand the craft and structure of readings. Students also integrate knowledge and ideas as they analyze texts. In addition, students practice creating examples of narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive writing in response to social studies content area.

(Content referenced in this resource primarily involves US history with some reference to exploration of North and South America. Some understanding of that content will be useful. However, students will be able to complete the tasks even if they haven’t spent significant time studying the content. The tasks focus more on historical thinking concepts and processes.)

The 20 task cards included in this resource cover the following historical thinking concepts:

  • BC/BCE and AD/CE;
  • time terminology (decades, centuries, millennia, era);
  • timelines;
  • primary and secondary sources; and
  • multiple perspectives.

Options for using this resource include bell work, exit work, homework, center work, small group work, partner work, and whole-class work.

Sample activities include the following:

  • reading and responding to short texts;
  • demonstrating understanding of and applying time concepts to history;
  • creating vertical, horizontal, single, and multi-tier timelines;
  • analyzing primary and secondary resources; and
  • identifying and providing multiple perspectives on historical events.
