This 21 slide PowerPoint presentation exposes the student to Byzantine and Islamic art from the Middle Age time period and facilitates the creation of a ceramic tile. It is a part of an Art History unit I have developed covering important art periods, major artists and the development of art. The title slide lists all of the periods I have included in the unit. I also have included a timeline showing all art periods the unit covers. This section is 21 slides long and focuses on the ceramic tile art. I use images of ancient and modern tiles of this art style to guide the art student into creating a strong design to use in painting their own tile. The first section gives an overview of the "where, who, and what" of Byzantine and Islamic art-where is the geographic location of the culture, who would commission and create the art, and what art is this period known for. Then the student will study many images of tiles, observe and discuss the characteristics of tiles(I have made transitions slow to give time for discussing), and create a design for their own tile. This PowerPoint helps the student understand the craft of tile making and its place in the history of art. This presentation is a good bridge between Ancient art and the highly skilled Renaissance period, it deepens the understanding of art developing in skill and culture.
