This reading lesson presents information about the huge faces of four American presidents carved into Mount Rushmore. It summarizes the contributions of the four presidents depicted in the mountain, and gives the history of why and how the monument was built. Also described are construction challenges faced by the sculptor and how he solved the problems. Students are given 14 reading comprehension and vocabulary questions. Comprehension skills emphasized are: Distinguishing facts/non-facts, sequencing events, drawing conclusions, making inferences, determining causes and effects, and finding details. The vocabulary taught and tested is depicted, unique, chisel, independence, abolish, and sanctuary. Reading and answering the questions will serve as a beneficial standardized test preparation for your students. There are two and a half pages of informational text, three plus pages of questions and the 7th page is the answer key. You get an image of the Mount Rushmore Memorial and an image of the sculptor.This lesson coordinates well with my other TPT product - The Chief Crazy Horse Statue which is only 17 miles away from Mount Rushmore. Both are very interesting! This product is a word document that is easy to print off and can readily be edited if necessary.
