This project is for music appreciation centered around rock 'n roll and modern music. The project allows students almost complete creative freedom while combining cross-curricular elements. Students have a blast completing this assignment and are very proud of their finished work.
The project contains the list of genres, instructions, a blank notes sheet for students, a list of potential bands, and the grading rubric. I printed out this packet at gave it all to the students.
I let my students work on this project over a 2 month period. This was on block scheduling meeting ever other day for 90 minutes - students were given 45 minutes of class lab time to work on their project.
This project can be used in a smaller time frame or by younger students by simply having them work in groups of 4 (my class did this individually).
The same project could also be done surrounding different composers or artists of other genres. I have also been told by teachers in my building that they would like to use this for historical events. The possibilities are endless, but the idea is to get the students to turn in anything EXCEPT plain typed black and white.
The students are to make their table of contents the explanation of their project. Here they list the genre as it is titled o the list and explain what they did to satisfy that genre (they also put a source here if one was used).
For example: One of my students included a Star Wars movie in their Led Zeppelin project. When looking at the project I wasn't sure why or what that was supposed to be so I picked up their table of contents and there it was. Historical Context: he included the movie as a representation of the historical context of the 1970's and talked about how it's release impacted millions. (Another example is that a student brought in a Vietnam War helmet for her Bob Dylan project to represent the historical context of the 1960's)
