Grigori Rasputin, the “Mad Monk” was born into a peasant family in Siberia, Russia, around 1869. After failing to become a monk, Rasputin became a wanderer and eventually entered the court of Czar Nicholas II because of his alleged healing abilities. Known for his prophetic powers, he became a favorite of the Nicholas's wife, Alexandra Feodorovna, when she became convinced that the monk was a gift to her from God, sent to ease her passage through life as the “Little Mother of Russia,” and to preserve the life of her only son, Alexei.

Between 1906 and 1914, various politicians and journalists used Rasputin’s association with the imperial family to undermine the dynasty’s credibility and push for reform. Rasputin helped their efforts by claiming to be the Czarina’s advisor, and accounts of his rampant lascivious behavior emerged in the press, compounding contempt among state officials.

Members of the extended Romanov family, sensing that something was not quite right, were not pleased with Alexandra’s increasing reliance on his counsel. She credited his prayers with saving Alexei’s life on more than one occasion, and she taught her children to view Rasputin as their “friend.” She was careful to hide him from other family members and caretakers, and the children didn’t dare talk to others about him.

There were numerous reports of liaisons with many women and an affair with Alexandra herself. No matter what he did the family supported him blindly having solidified his position as caretaker of the heir to the throne, Alexei. After the disaster of World War I and the civil unrest in the country, extend family members arranged to have him murdered.
