Appropriate for any level of German, this 20-minute power point/interactive activity introduces students (in English) to the history of the German language and its relationship with English. First, students explore English and German as it relates to other Indo-Germanic languages. Then, they look at different versions of the Our Father to see what has (and hasn't) changed over time in German. Which words are the same? Which words don't you recognize? Is there similar word order between versions? The presentation contains extensive notes, elaborations, and suggestions for how students might answer the questions (though answers may vary). You don't need to be a historical linguist to introduce students to the history of German - here's some help!
I've used this in my Beginning German class but it could also be used at other levels, since the presentation is in English.
