This project has students view a movie about a historical event/person or one that takes place during a particular time period. Students then research the event/person/time period and to evaluate the movie as a good source of history. Students use primary sources as the basis for their research and then they create a presentation as well as a written assignment to justify their opinion. Included in this project are the following:
1: Overall description of the assignment
2: A form that can be used to help your students give suggestions for a movie they can watch.
3: A movie guided designed to be used during the movie viewing.
4: A sample listing of movies
5: The specific information regarding the research elements and final assignment.
I have used this assignment as an ongoing project that might serve as an assignment for a quarter or semester. Typically I give the final details of the research assignment after movie guides have been turned in even though the students have already been told what the end product will typically consist of.
I feel this is a great project to get students actively thinking about history outside of the textbook and to develop critically thinking skills.
