Students are shocked to learn about Hitler's brazenly discriminatory Nuremberg Laws. How terrible! America would never do anything like this, right? But wait…during this same time period, a majority of U.S. states enforced strict “Jim Crow Laws” that targeted African Americans in the exact same ways. Students read actual laws from America and Germany, analyze similarities and difference, and then respond to a prompt with their opinion on whether comparisons are fair or not. Fantastic for class discussion afterwards.
(Interesting Note This is a fantastic opportunity to discuss race relations today - white students are far more likely to say the comparison is unfair because it is hard for them to accept that white Americans would target minorities as intentionally and ruthlessly as Nazi did Jews.)
