I have students fill these out quarterly so they can easily be paired up. Students agree to be each other's, for example, penguin partner and someone else's lion. At the end of filling them out, I ask who is missing each animal so that I can get them paired up with as many people as possible. It is ok for students to have a blank.
When I want them to pair up, I can call out an animal and they get to work. If a student is absent, a student without a partner can fill in or create a group of three.
