If you'd like to keep your students excited about coming to school in these last few weeks, or if you’re looking for a way to keep your students from sliding down the dreaded summer slump, we’ve got an incredible novel unit with student-centered, engaging activities that any 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader would love. Our students enjoy reading this book so much that we wanted to make a unit that would be extremely flexible and easily adaptable for all teachers and students. The Holes Novel Unit can be used as a culminating end of the year novel study in which students can complete activities either independently and/or in groups. It can also be used for those tutors who want a fun activity for the summer without having to create something from scratch. In addition, we’ve also used it as an engaging way to introduce class procedures and novel reading at the beginning of the year for even the most reluctant readers!
Whether you’ve taught for years and are looking for a new twist on a great book, or you’re a new teacher who isn’t sure how to get students excited about reading, this unit was made to be a perfect fit.
In this unit you'll find:
-4-5 weeks of complete lesson plans and activities, all aligned to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Reading, Writing and Speaking/Listening Common Core State Standards
-printables and activities that can be used in whole group lessons, for independent projects, and/or as interactive partner or group lessons that get kids moving
-descriptions of all activities used
-interactive notebook activities
-samples of completed student work
-multisensory activities that appeal to several learning styles for differentiation
-comprehension questions and answer keys for each chapter
-vocabulary cards hand-picked by our students and by us
There are many activities in this unit... don’t feel like you have to do it all. It is meant for teachers to be able to pick and choose what will be best for their students and for them!
