Overview of Materials
Comprehension & Skill Practice: The chapters have been split up into 7 weeks. Each week includes 2 sets of comprehension questions that are formatted similarly to the types and styles of questions your students will encounter on the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBAC). Questions range in difficulty, with the majority being higher order thinking. Each week also focuses on a different “focus skill” (compare/contrast, problem/solution, sequence of events, character traits, summary, etc.)
The weeks are split up as follows:
Week 1: Chapters 1-6 Skill: Character Traits & Evidence
Week 2: Chapters 7-13 Skill: Sequence of Events
Week 3: Chapters 14-19 Skill: Cause & Effect / Cause with Multiple Effects
Week 4: Chapters 20-26 Skill: Problem & Solution
Week 5: Chapters 27-34 Skill: Cause & Effect / Summary
Week 6: Chapters 35-41 Skill: Character Traits / Compare & Contrast
Week 7: Chapters 42-50 Skill: Sequence of Events / Summary
Comprehension & Skill Assessments: Assessments are over all chapters for the week and are also formatted similarly to the types and styles of questions your students will encounter on the SBAC assessments. The skill assessments address the focus skill from that week, but require students to analyze information from all chapters read that week. Questions require higher order thinking and text evidence to support their answer.
Vocabulary Lists: Tier 2 and Tier 3 words were selected from each week of reading to better aid student comprehension and understanding. Student-friendly definitions for each word are provided along with part of speech. Page numbers were not included because my class has multiple copyright dates so page numbers are not always consistent.
Vocabulary Assessments: Vocabulary assessments are in a variety of layouts. Some ask students to put each of the words into their own sentences to show understanding, some ask students to match the word and definition, and a few ask for students to put the appropriate word into a pre-written sentence. There is a vocabulary assessment for each week.
Final Project: My students complete an ABC book as their final project after reading Holes. Details accompany the project at the end of this product along with the templates to create these projects with your students as well.
