If you teach Holes, you need this resource! This is an engaging and interactive 78 slide presentation using Slide Rocket (like Powerpoint but so much better). This presentation guides instruction through all 50 chapters of the novel Holes, by Louis Sachar. Throughout the presentation, you will find embedded video clips from the movie to allow students to compare/contrast specific sections of the novel to the film. 80% of the slides have images to enhance engagement with the text. The slides themselves act as mini-lessons on topics such as: tracing the theme of transformation of Stanley; setting and mood; points of view; plot devices (flashback), figurative language; characterization techniques; argument writing using the P.E.E. paragraph method (with a video lesson embedded in presentation). I use this presentation with 6th graders, but it could easily be used from 5th through 8th grades. This presentation was created to accompany a nine weeks survival-themed Common Core Unit. All mini-lessons are designed to support teachers looking to shift their instruction to the new Common Core Standards. There is an emphasis on citing evidence, argument writing, close reading, and text-to-media connections. There are added notes for each slide to further explain how it can be used for instruction. This presentation has been very popular with other ELA middle school teachers - I hope you enjoy it as well!
