36 extension activities designed to test students' knowledge of the novel, their ability to see events from more than one viewpoint and their ability to write in different styles/formats. This is a bundle of 36 assignments / prompts based on Holes by Louis Sachar. They are HIGH ORDER activities.
Many tasks require students to imagine that they are characters in the novel, and then to write in the voice of that character using an appropriate register and tone. Some writing activities are based on the complete text (review, email/letter, interview questions, epilogue/prediction exercises). Most activities are best suited to use as you read the text as they are based on incidents in the text.
They are WRITING exercises, so they are also designed to improve student's abilities in different styles of writing. Styles include:
- Diary Entries
- Dialogues (some to be acted out)
- Reports (Broadcast and Newspaper)
- Interview Questions
- Creative Writing / Short Stories
- Media (Poster, Label)
- Application Form
- Drama workshop
All assignments include hints, sub-headings or structure guides to provide a starting point or scaffolding to help students get started.
There are 36 activities in total. These writing tasks give students an opportunity to show a deep understanding of the novel, as well as to practice writing in different formats. Many of the activities could be used for summative assessment.
It's a Word document. There are activities for each part of the book. The document is organised in this manner. The preview file has some of the writing prompts for the first part of the novel.
