What better way to learn and practice DNA sequences, base pairs and structure than with a festive holiday activity?
Students will pick from several DNA codes, that they will find the matching base pairs to, then decode their DNA sequence to find a secret holiday message!
The activity then includes a fun and festive hands-on opportunity to build a DNA model ornament using the DNA sequence that codes for the secret holiday code of their choice!
Materials will need to be supplied by the teacher, which include:
~28 gauge wire (about a yard per student) or string (depends of size of beads)
~Glass beads of 6 different colors (can be made from plastic beads, but will change the look of the DNA model. This activity shows diagrams with 2 colors of round glass beads and 4 different colors of bugle, cylindrical beads)
Teacher Key and supplies included with student handout.
