Planning and budgeting a group dinner is a ton of work! With this project, kids experience the steps of planning and budgeting a dinner for their family. This is an AWESOME project to do with your math class before the holidays! It will require a set of grocery store ads from your local grocery store (one ad per student).
This project includes:
*Intro page - gets students thinking about all of the things that go into planning a dinner and includes reflection questions upon completion
*Planning/Budgeting page - this includes a chart for students to track items as they "put them in their cart" - includes area for quantity, price per oz/box/lb etc, item total, and then a running total column. You can decide - calculators throughout or calculators to check work at the end
*Menu Reference page - this page gives menu suggestions, recipe ingredients, and portion sizes so that students have an idea of how many people various serving sizes would feed and provides an idea list and reminders of condiments and beverages to ensure they are serving a well-rounded meal
My students LOVE this project every year! I let them partner up but submit their own budgeting sheets. They work on this for a portion of class each day the week before winter break.
