This activity is designed to get students in the holiday spirit while engaging their mathematical thinking processes. Perfect for Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza and New Years (and all other holidays)! Students will be shown different buffet set ups of holiday dinners and estimate how many people each spread of food could feed. We will show them what a plate per person would look like and about how much of each dish represents a serving. From there students will make an educated guess. The last page of the activity will present students with a holiday recipe. Based on the quantities given, they will be asked to estimate how many people the recipe could feed. At this point, the lesson should be open for classroom discussion and a sharing of thoughts. The answers to each estimation situation will be on the last page of the packet titled “Answer Key”. Enjoy and have fun with your students!
