Here are some basic symbols (Symbol Stix rom News2You) for Thanksgiving, Winter holidays, New Year and Valentine’s Day that can be used during your units for those themes, when reading books about those topics, and wanting to get students ready for discussions about them.
In addition to the file folder activity, you can make copies of the larger symbol cards and have students play a “Memory” type game, matching the symbols and naming them, or asking for them in a “Go Fish” type game, or matching them in an “Old Maid” type game (just remember to leave out a copy of one symbol).
Have students match them, then help them find them in their aac systems. Or add them to the events or activities page of their aac system. Add them to calendar time.
There is a game board included with special spinner. (The boards can be glued to a single file folder for ease.) Theh spinner uses 12 of the symbols, so that students move forward to the next one pictured.
I had also added Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hanukkah communication boards, as well as a card game activity board (core vocabulary based).
I have more resources for learning to use symbols for communication and vocabulary, including Visual Cues to Get Ready, Tell What's Wrong
