This is a lesson on Christmas Cactus (A.K.A. Holiday Cactus) that could be used in a classroom setting for enrichment or a mini-lesson around the holidays or for a life science unit on plants. The lesson involves students finding pertinent information about this plant on an informational sheet (provided) that includes plant culture, growing needs, and unique characteristics. The lesson also includes directions on taking plant cuttings from a Christmas Cactus to have your students each try to root and grow their own plant; thus, having a try with one form of plant propagation. This unit is part of a larger holiday plant unit I have conducted for the last 10 years with my elementary garden club students in grades 2-5. It would also lend itself to be a topic for enrichment with TAG (talented and gifted) students at the elementary level.
