During the month between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I teach a “Winter Holidays” unit that focuses on the celebrations of Hanukkah, Christmas, Diwali, Kwanzaa, and Chinese New Year. It’s my way of incorporating non-fiction text review while combating the holiday “hoopla.”
Part of the unit asks students to find commonalities between the diverse holidays. Students usually find that in all of the celebrations, lights are important. We use this idea of lights to determine themes and discuss how people can serve as lights to each other. Being positive, kind, helpful, or thoughtful are all excellent ways to spread light to those around you.
Two weeks before the winter break, I replace my typical morning work with these “Holiday Lights Task Cards.” The purpose is to extend our thoughts on how people serve as lights, reflect on ways people have been lights to us in the past, and record ideas on how we can be lights to others in the future.
Included in this resource:
1. Teacher Notes
2. 12 Task Cards with writing response activities
3. Two Student Response forms
4. Packet Cover
5. Student Direction Sheets
