Here is a fun way for your students to practice nonsense words during your literacy centers, by themselves, or at small group time with you. Thirty different nonsense words allow students to gain confidence and develop more fluent reading as they practice reading funny (unusual) CVC words. Easily confused consonants are featured as both beginning and ending sounds in these silly words. Students will solidify their understanding of a "closed" syllable (CVC word). They will begin to automatically read such a word with a short vowel sound. This helps them to recognize short vowel sound chunks in longer words as well. You can observe the game and use it as a formative assessment of who is still in need of more practice. I use this and other games like this with my RTI small group as mentioned in my blog, onerealreader.blogspot.com.
Just print, laminate, cut out, and store in a baggie. Use it year after year!
