Encourage students to read during the holidays with this color-in booklet. Then in January, host a "Welcome Back Hot Chocolate Party" for those holiday readers. (I try to pick the coldest and ugliest day of the week). This project can also be tied to the "Read to Succeed - Free Magic Mountain Ticket" program. All details, links, and printables are included.
The program is really simple. For every 15 minutes the students read, they get to color in a section. The entire picture represents 3 hours of reading - which is half way to the Read to Succeed Goal. The "17 Species" form represents 5 hours of reading.
I have used this idea for several years now, and have seen great mid-year progress in reading scores. They love the reward of a January Hot Chocolate Party partnered with the healthy snacks.
There is a regular version and an editable version in case you need to change number of minutes a student reads to color a section. There are three different color pages to choose from as well as two title pages.
If you study penguins in January, then this is the perfect way introduce the 17 species of penguins. You may be interested in my Penguin Research. Here are some links below. Make sure to grab the two freebies so you can try out the Penguin Research.
