This project can be used in a 3rd-4th grade classroom after the students have learned to add and subtract whole numbers and money. This is a great project to use before the holidays! It will help put your students in the holiday spirit and it gives them the opportunity to focus on giving, not receiving.
Students will be shopping for four people (friends or family members). They are allowed to spend up to $50.00 on each person. The focus should be on them buying multiple items to add together and then subtracting that total from their budget of $50 per person.
Students will buy gifts for each person, calculate the total spent per person, calculate the total spent on all gifts, calculate the change remaining per person, calculate the change remaining from the $200, and reflect on the project and their learning experience. A grading rubric is attached. I’ve also included suggestions for differentiation on the next page.
This is a great activity to combine real world skills and math . Perfect activity to complete before break. Enjoy!
